RAF Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of access tunnels leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey said.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces participating in this operation for their professionalism and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were among a great many British personnel stationed over the festive period. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
