Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
