In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.
The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement
According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Wider Political Discussions Taking Place
In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
